When all the dust had settled, it was Warner Bros.’ action fantasy “Clash of the Titans” winning the weekend’s clash of movie genres in a boxoffice battle with Fox’s action comedy “Date Night.”

Preliminary studio estimates on Sunday had showed the Fox opener squeaking past the 3D holdover for No. 1 in domestic rankings. But updated numbers showed “Titans” repeating atop the boxoffice heap in its sophomore session.

Monday morning’s final official data — or “actuals,” in industry argot — showed “Titans” topped the weekend with $26.6 million. That gave the Sam Worthington starrer a $110.2 million cume.

Australian actor Sam Worthington was “blown away” by the media reaction after he was spotted chewing gum while presenting an award at the Oscars – because he didn’t realize it was a major faux pas.

The “Avatar” actor stepped in front of the cameras with Jennifer Lopez during the Academy Awards ceremony last month to present one of the coveted trophies.

But Worthington’s onstage chewing didn’t go unnoticed, and he admits the media coverage in his native Australia was particularly harsh.
He tells People.com, “The Australian press just roasted me for it. I was so blown away, I could have been eating a ham sandwich and wouldn’t have realized it. I was standing next to (Jennifer Lopez)! I just wanted to throw my hands in the air and scream, ‘Wooo!’”

LOS ANGELES, April 8 (Reuters Life!) – Sam Worthington is among the hottest leading men in Hollywood.

He starred in the top-grossing movie of all time, the $2.7 billion “Avatar,” and his latest film, “Clash of the Titans” rocked box offices with a $108 million global debut last weekend.

In “Titans,” which is a remake of the 1981 cult classic movie of the same name, he plays Perseus, son of the Zeus, who sets out to undermine a plot that would overthrow his father and encounters monsters like the dreaded Kraken.

Worthington, 33, spoke to Reuters about “Clash,” becoming a major star and wearing skirts.

Fated to be the big movie of April 2, Clash of the Titans fulfilled its destiny with $61.2 million, shattering the Easter opening weekend record formerly held by Scary Movie 4 ($40.2 million). Between the Titans, Tyler Perry, Dragons and Miley Cyrus, the weekend as a whole set an April benchmark and was up 14 percent from last year.

Clamoring onto approximately 6,700 screens at 3,777 theaters, Clash of the Titans, which has grossed $63.9 million including its Thursday night previews, boasted the second highest-grossing April debut ever behind Fast and Furious, which generated $71 million on the same weekend last year. However, the Clash remake fell short of the movie that spawned its green-lighting, which wasn’t the 1981 original, but the Spring 2007 release and Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures stable mate 300. 300 unleashed $70.9 million in its first weekend on around 4,800 screens at 3,103 sites without the aid of 3D. Clash’s initial attendance was also lower than Troy but appears to have been a smidgen higher than Gladiator, among past similar titles.

Warner Bros.’ “Clash of the Titans” marched to a triumphant $61.4 million in weekend boxoffice to the top domestic rankings and seemingly validate the studio’s move to convert the action fantasy into 3D imagery.

The Sam Worthington starrer boasts $64.1 million in cumulative boxoffice including Thursday night “preshows” in mostly 2D venues. During the weekend, “Titans” played in 3,777 theaters, including about 1,800 3D locations.

Clash of the Titans raked in an estimated $26.4 million on approximately 6,700 screens at 3,777 sites, but it wasn’t the only busy movie on Good Friday: Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? pulled in an estimated $12.3 million on around 2,900 screens at 2,155 sites, while The Last Song collected an estimated $7.1 million on close to 3,300 screens at 2,673 sites.

Despite starring in the highest grossing film of all time, we know very little about “Avatar’s” Sam Worthington. Aside from being Australian and incapable of completely suppressing said accent while playing big screen yanks, the man is a mystery. I’ve long suspected he’s one of those actors that doesn’t enjoy the promotional process that comes along with making movies — sitting for countless interviews and crafting clever soundbites.
